I. What This Cylinder Is
The H-001-7057 is a front loader boom cylinder for refuse trucks. One product, one job: swing the lifting arms that reach forward, grab a dumpster, and lift it over the cab into the hopper.

III. The Cushioning — Why This Cylinder Is Different
A front loader arm does violent work. It swings a loaded container through an arc and stops hard at the end of stroke. Without cushioning, that stop is a mechanical slam: the piston hits the end cap, the load whips forward, the frame groans, and the seals take the shock.
Do that a few hundred times a week, fifty weeks a year, and the damage adds up:
- End cap cracking from repeated impact
- Mounting lug fatigue at the pin bosses
- Seal damage from the piston hammering the gland
- Noise that tells the driver something is wrong before it breaks
The cushioned design changes the last inches of travel. As the piston approaches the end, it enters a cushion sleeve. Trapped oil is forced through a metering orifice instead of escaping freely. The deceleration becomes controlled. The piston slows, stops, and settles — instead of slamming.
The result is not softer performance. It is harder performance over more cycles. Less shock per cycle means the cylinder, the mounting, and the arm structure all survive longer.
If you are replacing a failed arm cylinder on a high-cycle route truck, cushioning is the correct spec — not an upgrade.
IV. The Geometry — What 4.5 × 2.5 × 41.5 Means
4.5-inch bore. This is the force generator. Working pressure acting on the piston area produces the arm's lifting force. The 4.5-inch bore is the class that handles standard residential and commercial refuse containers.
2.5-inch rod.The rod carries the compression load when the arm pushes, and the tensile load when it pulls. The 2.5-inch diameter gives the column strength to resist buckling under side loading — and front loader arms take side loading, because the container swings on cables or chains.
41.5-inch stroke.The travel distance the arm needs to go from ground pickup position to over-cab dump. Stroke is a geometry decision — too short and the arm cannot complete the arc; too long and the cylinder over-travels and the body interferes.
The three numbers work together. Change one and the arm's motion changes. This is why we build to the catalog spec rather than "close enough."
V. What the Job Does to This Cylinder
The H-001-7057 works outdoors, fully exposed. The rod extends above the cab on every cycle, into road salt spray in winter, landfill dust and grit year-round, rain, ice, and temperature swings. Occasionally a misjudged container pickup puts a side impact on the whole assembly.
Two things decide how long it lasts:
Rod surface. The rod has to be hard enough to shrug off grit, smooth enough to not wear the seal, and corrosion-resistant enough to survive road salt. Surface finish and treatment quality separate a two-year cylinder from a six-year cylinder.
Seal package.The rod spends most of its life extended, which means more rod surface passes through the wiper and more chance of dragging contaminants back inside. A wiper that scrapes debris off before it reaches the rod seal is not optional on a garbage truck.
