Product Introduction
Piston hydraulic cylinders come in two main structural types: single-rod and double-rod. When it comes to fixing methods, there are two common ways—either fixing the cylinder body itself or fixing the piston rod. In terms of hydraulic action, they’re divided into single-acting and double-acting types too.
For single-acting hydraulic cylinders, pressure oil is only supplied to one cavity of the cylinder. The extension or retraction of the cylinder is achieved by the pressure of this oil, while the return movement usually relies on external forces like the weight of the load or a spring. As for double-acting hydraulic cylinders, pressure oil alternates between the two cavities of the cylinder. This alternating oil supply pushes the piston to move in both directions, with the hydraulic pressure alone driving all the piston’s movements, no need for additional external forces. This design makes double-acting cylinders more flexible and widely used in scenarios that require precise control of both extension and retraction.
Fault diagnosis

Common performance issues in such cases include inaccurate stopping of the piston rod, insufficient thrust, reduced speed, and unstable operation. The specific causes are as follows:
(1) Hydraulic oil is supposed to flow back to the oil tank through the relief valve during operation. If dirt enters the relief valve and jams its spool, keeping the relief valve in a normally open state, the hydraulic oil will directly flow back to the oil tank by bypassing the relief valve, resulting in no oil being supplied to the hydraulic cylinder. If the load is excessively heavy, even if the adjusted pressure of the relief valve has reached the maximum rated value, the hydraulic cylinder still cannot obtain the required thrust to maintain continuous operation and will fail to act. Additionally, if the adjusted pressure of the relief valve is too low, the system pressure will be insufficient to meet the thrust required by the load, which is specifically reflected in insufficient thrust. In such cases, it is necessary to check and adjust the relief valve in a timely manner.

Multiple hydraulic cylinders and single-beam crane telescopic arms often encounter a common issue: the hard chrome coating on the inner surface of the cylinder tends to peel off. This problem is mainly caused by three types of situations, each with clear causes and practical manifestations, as detailed below:
A. Poor adhesion of the hard chrome coating: This is usually because when processing the cylinder inner surface before electroplating, the oil removal and degreasing work is not done thoroughly—there may still be residual oil stains or dirt on the surface. In addition, if the surface activation treatment is not in place, the oxide film on the metal surface is not completely removed, which directly leads to poor adhesion between the chrome coating and the base metal, and finally causes the coating to peel off.
B. Wear and tear of the hard chrome layer: During the long-term use of the hydraulic cylinder, the piston moves back and forth inside the cylinder. The friction between the piston and the cylinder wall will generate iron powder, and these iron powder particles will act as an abrasive, constantly grinding the hard chrome coating on the inner surface. If there is water mixed in the hydraulic oil, the grinding effect will be more obvious, accelerating the wear of the chrome layer; in severe cases, the coating will be worn through, and even the base metal will be exposed.
C. Corrosion caused by contact potential difference: This kind of corrosion is not easy to occur when the hydraulic cylinder is in continuous operation, but it is very common when the cylinder is idle for a long time. Because when the cylinder is not working, the metal surfaces of different materials (such as the cylinder body and piston) are in contact, forming a potential difference, which leads to local corrosion. Especially when there is moisture or impurities in the hydraulic oil, the corrosion speed will be significantly accelerated, and the chrome coating will peel off due to corrosion damage.
